142 schools from all over Malaysia have assigned themselves to take part in the 6th Inter-School Debating Championship 2007 that being organized by International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and the number is expected to increase more, stated Mohd Khair Ngadiron as the advisor of IIUM Bahasa Melayu Debating Club.
The debating competition is divided into two categories which are Bahasa Melayu category and English category received participation from boarding school (SBP), Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM), Sek. Keb. (S.K.) and Sek. Keb. Cina.
In the press conference, Deputy Rector of Students and Alumni Affairs, Ustaz Hamidon Abdul Hamid mentioned a person can be shaped to think critically and analytically through debating.
“Debating is soft skills which could also sharpen the communication skills and encourage integration among other races in Malaysia. I hoped we can also make public speaking competition in the future and if possible, we (IIUM) are planning of making World Inter- School Debating Championship, InsyaAllah.”
He added for this year competition, IIUM received sponsorship from Petronas (RM10, 000), IIUM Holdings Sdn. Bhd. (RM20, 000), IIUM Alumni Society (RM15, 000) and TIME Engineering is the platinum sponsor (RM155, 000). Berita Harian is the official newspaper for the championship.

This competition would be held from 12th April 2007 to 17th April 2007 in IIUM, being conducted by following the Parliamentary format based on the group system like what been applied at the international debating competition.
